Reasons for Potential Opportunity
Woolworths Group has on 24 February 2021, revealed a strong set of results for the 27 weeks ending 03 January 2021. While the first half of FY21 continue to feel the first-hand impacts of the pandemic, the Group recorded a 10.6 per cent increase in Group sales to $35.845 million and a 10.5 per cent increase in Group earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to $2,092 million. With the exception of Hotels, all segments recorded strong sales growth, buoyed by record year-end retail trading. However, momentum slowed in New Zealand Food, particularly in Q2 as the division was impacted by a slowdown in international tourism.
In May of 2021, Woolworths Group announced the demerger of its Endeavour Group, Australia’s leading retail drinks and hospitality business. The premise of the demerger is to create simpler, more focused, independent businesses better equipped for future growth. More so, in June of 2021, the ACCC did not oppose the Woolworths Group to acquire 65% of PFD Foods. If the deal goes ahead in late of 2021, this will add to the company’s investment portfolio and supply chain service, with PFD Foods being a major client for Collins Food Group.
